How IoT is helpful in Natural Disasters?

Hurricanes often hit North America and the islands nearby. These hurricanes cause a lot of damage to both humans and public-private property. Data says that the flood level lasts for a long time.

Some of the private and leading communication companies are providing excellent service to the people in times like this -

  • Gathering Data

Different private, as well as government organizations, offer their help in these situations. The first thing that we need in such situations is data. Data about all the areas and homes which are affected by the disaster. They collect this data with the help of IoT. Sensors connected to the Internet are spread all across the city to collect the information regarding water level in gauges. If the water level in gauges is at the normal level, then it will show us the green spot on the satellite map. In conditions like the flood when the gauges overflow with water, it will show us the red light. This will help us in responding fast.
  • Air Inspection

Companies like AT&T provide the facility of drones for air surveillance. These drones help us see the bigger picture. It can tell us the amount of damage occurred. It can also find the people trapped in their own homes or roofs. A lot of people had lost their lives when air surveillance was not invented. This has caused damage to the kids who lost their parents in the disaster. Air Inspection also helps in claiming Insurance because it acts as proof that you were damaged by the catastrophe occurred. More than 50 drones of AT&T are deployed across the city for surveillance. These drone collects and sends real-time data to the Rescue team so that they can save as many lives as possible. Because of these drones lifesaving has been increased by 53%.
  • Predicting Natural Disasters

A few years back weather prediction was done using mechanical instruments, and there was no technology available to process such a big scale of data. Therefore weather predictions used to be either wrong or delayed. Because of this, we were unable to predict the exact time and place of the hurricane or earthquake to occur. But today with the help of advance Network of sensors and Big Data analytics we can precisely predict the time and place of the disaster.
For example, there is a huge network of sensors which can monitor the seismic activity going on underground. Sensors communicate with each other as well as with the main server or hub. Hub will provide the GPS data from all sensors to the Government or rescue team. This sensor network will survey the earth below us continuously. This system can sense even a minor shake of 0.5 and share the results in real-time to the Regulatory Board. Therefore the early warning system designed using concepts of IoT can be very effective. Here IoT acts as a link between the data collected by sensors and drones. IoT sensor networks can help us prevent the damage happening to people and drones can help us save people who haven’t been prevented.

Well, IoT can help us in many way in our life as there are many professional IoT app development companies which can create apps using this technology.
